The StartSmart Secondary program consists of four different workshops, each focusing on a different topic in depth: earning, saving, spending and investing. Each workshop is an interactive learning experience that is designed to engage students and empower them in making their personal financial choices. Choose from any or all workshops in accordance with your students’ needs.

The following workshops are available: 

SmartEarning (Years 9 - 11)

Several concepts are covered, including:

  • your first job
  • differences between full-time, part-time and casual work
  • hours, sick and holiday leave, pay
  • employee rights and responsibilities
  • award wages
  • tax and Australia’s progressive tax system
  • tax file number and lodging tax returns
  • superannuation
  • checking your pay slip

This workshop run for 45-50 minutes.

This workshop explores a variety of topics associated with earning money, such as getting your first job, paying tax and understanding financial documents. Difficult financial concepts are brought to life in a way that excites and engages students through scenarios that relate directly to their own experiences.

SmartSaving (Years 9 - 11)

This workshop considers the process of saving money and setting personal financial goals. Students learn strategies for saving their money, and are given the tools to maintain their personal financial records.

Several concepts are covered, including:

  • the value of saving
  • setting saving goals
  • setting budgets
  • saving money in a bank
  • earning interest on savings
  • reading financial documents, such as bank statements

This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.

SmartSpending (Years 9 - 11)

In this workshop, students learn about all the issues surrounding their spending choices. Students learn information that bears directly on the challenges surrounding their decisions as consumers, from their first job to their first car. Students explore the personal motives and social pressures that influence their financial decisions. The workshop inspires them to be responsible and discerning in their personal financial management decisions.

Several concepts are covered, including:

  • personal financial responsibility
  • emotional and rational motives behind financial decisions
  • mobile phone costs
  • prepaid and plan options
  • reading financial documents, such as bank statements
  • reading phone bills
  • comparative shopping
  • gratification delay
  • recognising hidden costs

This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.

SmartInvesting (Recommended for Years 10 and 11)

Several concepts are covered, including:

  • risk and reward
  • what is a risk profile?
  • the value of having a financial education
  • good and bad debt
  • what are investment assets?

This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.

It may seem like it requires a lot of money to start investing, but the truth is that anyone with a bank account could already be investing. Nonetheless, there are certain things you need to know if you are going to develop your investment portfolio. This workshop examines different types of investment and demonstrates how healthy investment mindsets are crucial to making investments real, accessible and profitable.
