Our world-class facilitators
StartSmart sessions are delivered by a national team of world-class facilitators. All facilitators have been selected, trained and mentored by Peter Sheahan (National Speakers Association Speaker of the Year 2006) and Dominic Thurbon (World Top 10 Debater). The facilitators bring their own individual styles and energy to the task of engaging students and equipping them with money management skills for life.
Kate Murray (NSW)
Kate brings a wealth of international business, presenting and education experience to StartSmart Pathways. Before joining the team, Kate travelled the world, teaching in education institutions across Australia and the United Kingdom. Diverse experiences as a Careers Advisor and Entrepreneurial Studies teacher enriches her sessions and adds additional insight to her StartSmart workshops. With her longstanding interest in educating young adults about career development and financial literacy, Kate brings passion and purpose to the platform as a sought-after keynote speaker and workshop facilitator in NSW and around Australia.
Sebastian Pertosi (NSW)
Sebastian developed his passion to help young people 8 years ago, when he ran interactive workshops in schools and community centres for the Department of Health. Since then he has worked face to face with various clients, including managing large tour groups. He has personally learned the importance of developing money management skills during his travels to over 30 countries and has a strong focus on his own and others personal development
Dom Phelan (VIC)
Dom graduated from Ballarat University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance. He now uses his extensive presenting skills to engage and entertain secondary and tertiary students in his home state of Victoria and across Australia. He also has vast experience in Theatre in Education and brings an infectious sense of humour to his role as a StartSmart Pathways facilitator. Dom is committed to helping young Australians develop their financial futures in an interactive and fun way.
Jessica Beard (VIC)
Jessica is passionately dedicated to ensuring the growth of young adults into lifelong learners. After graduating with a Bachelor degree in Secondary Education, she has spent the last 3 of 5 years as a teacher living, working and travelling overseas. This makes Jessica acutely aware of the importance of money management skills to achieving personal goals, exploring new opportunities and enjoying life.
Kate Squires (QLD)
Kate is a self-titled ‘edu-tainment’ specialist. Kate’s goal is to inspire Queensland students to make smarter life decisions and work towards a brighter future. She has vast experience in engaging young people and presenting to audiences around the world, from entertaining on-board Disney Cruise Ships to educating audiences at Sea World about dolphins and seals. Kate is a dynamic facilitator and a catalyst for positive behavioural change.
Michelle Janssen (QLD)
Michelle graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Creative Industries in Drama in 2008. Since then, she has been working in Marketing and Communications, specialising in student recruitment and engagement. In addition to full time work, Michelle is also active in the not-for-profit sector, sitting on the board of the YWCA Queensland and organising youth focused fundraising events. Through these volunteer endeavours, Michelle has found her love of speaking, writing, educating and comedy performance. She is excited to help young people change their behaviours so they can be empowered to lead the life they choose.
Jonathan Bragg (SA)
Jonathan graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Drama from Flinders University Drama Centre before completing a Graduate Diploma in Education at Queensland University of Technology. After graduating, Jonathan taught English and Drama in Queensland and founded his own Adelaide-based theatre company. He is committed to educating young people about financial decision-making in an engaging and exciting manner
Alex Terblanche (WA)
The energy and passion Alex has for encouraging positive life skills change in young adults is clear for all to see. Having completed a Bachelor of Physical Education in New Zealand, he has continued to hone his facilitation and presenting skills through various outlets. Starting out as a secondary school teacher, Alex has also spent considerable time producing and delivering interactive adolescent relationship workshops. A youth mentor with the YMCA, an outstanding sportsman and possessing a wicked sense of humour, he is on a mission to change the financial literacy of a generation in West Australia.
