Rural and Regional Information
The StartSmart Primary program is available in rural and regional towns at certain times throughout the year in a specially tailored offering. Schools can check to see if there are already plans for StartSmart to visit their town:
Primary Rural and Regional Locations
The workshops teach students about earning, saving and spending money. Sessions are available in three stages. Each stage is designed to cater to a different level of learning. This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.

Stage One (suitable for Years 1 or 2)
In this workshop, students are introduced to money, what it is used for and how it can be earned and saved. Guided by Captain Super Cents, students are taught to distinguish between needs and wants and to recognise the dangers posed by Gobbles the Wallet Monster, who represents all those temptations to spend money needlessly. They learn fun rhymes and tips that help put them on a lifelong path of practising solid financial habits.
Several concepts are covered, including:
• notes and coins
• recognition of Australian currency
• using money in exchange for goods and services
• the difference between needs and wants
• earning money
• saving money
• safe places to story money
• keycards
This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.
Stage Two (suitable for Years 3 or 4)
This workshop teaches students about earning, saving and spending money. Students also learn to recognise the social pressures that make them want to spend money in the first place. Coach Cash – their personal financial fitness trainer – trains them to become elite athletes at managing their finances!
Several concepts are covered, including:
• international and Australian currency
• using money in exchange for goods and services
• what is a bank?
• bank cards
• earning
• saving
• comparing prices
• ordering spending preferences
• advertising and peer pressure
This workshop runs for 45-50 minutes.
Stage Three (suitable for Years 5 or 6)
In this workshop, students learn important financial literacy skills through a range of scenarios that relate directly to their daily lives. How can you earn money? What does it mean to earn money responsibly? How do you set a budget? What is interest? How do you compare prices when shopping?
Several concepts are covered, including:
• different ways of earning an income
• earning money responsibly
• saving money
• setting personal financial goals
• the uses of banks
• what is interest?
• differences between a credit card and a key card
• setting a budget
• keeping financial records
• comparing prices
