StartSmart Primary content was developed in conjunction with identified experts
in primary curriculum, early childhood cognitive development, behaviour change and
financial literacy.
Professor Martin Westwell, Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education
(BSc, Cam) (PhD Cam)
After completing his degree and PhD at Cambridge University, Martin moved to Oxford
University as a Research Fellow at the Biological and Medical and then
as Deputy Director of the Institute for the Future of the Mind. In January
2008 he became the Founding Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education.
He has won a number of awards for communicating science to non-scientists. In 1999
he was named as the Times Scientist of the New Century, and most recently
he was short-listed for the Parliamentary Science Writer of the Year award
in the UK.
Professor John Sweller, Emeritus Professor, School of Education (BA, Adel) (PhD,
Adel)
Professor John Sweller currently leads a team investigating cognitive processes
and their implications for teaching techniques and instructional design. He has
written numerous books on the subject of cognitive theory as well as published dozens
of peer reviewed articles on the subject.
Mr Barry Southwell, Head of Junior School, Oxford Falls Grammar School
Mr Southwell has been a primary school teacher for over 20 years with a depth of
experience working in the classroom prior to his current role as the Head of Junior
School. He holds a strong belief that the school curriculum should be embedded with
the maximised integration of practical "life skills" so students can see a real
application for their learning.
